The Fates are Bay Whitaker, Sue Cain and Tegwen Roberts. From Sheffield, UK they have been singing together since 2005. Originally a quartet (formed as an a-cappella ceilidh band) they became a three-piece in 2013.
All experienced writers and performers in their own right, with very different voices and styles, which come together in a complex and layered sound that embraces their different influences.
They bring their our own original take to traditional music, merging unaccompanied traditional songs with newly penned material. Their arrangements segue between lush, uncompromising harmonies and unexpected discord, blended with precision and humour. They love anything with a good rhythm and can’t resist a jig!
The Fates regularly host gigs and sessions, and love to sing in unusual and interesting spaces. They are as much at home performing on a festival stage or in a folk club, as singing in the back room of a pub or enjoying the acoustics of an abandoned railway tunnel!
They quote themselves as being happiest when singing with friends, old and new.
